This could be a traveling salesman, truck driver, athelete, musician, etc who is having tough times on the road working at their job. The “orange peels” are symbolic of little success, no real fruits of their labors to bring home, just “chicken feed” or “nickels and dimes”. In the first verse the person keeps getting “rotten deals” and “lies” in the business world. Frustration has set in but the person is still willing to keep going and to keep trying for their loved one. In the second verse the person complains of the food eaten while travelling. The musicians named are aware of these problems from their experiences and sing about it in their blues based music which the person is listening to. In the third verse more food is mentioned and probably some good food and endless hotel rooms “like finger bowls” are just nice but the experience soon wears off and doesn’t satisfy the loneliness of missing your loved one. The person persists and keeps working, giving it all they have in hopes of a better tomorrow, “for you baby”.
