Kate’s family: A question of etiquette

Every wedding has its share of drama. The royal wedding is no different. Kate Middleton's parents, Michael and Carole, are raising some eyebrows over rumors they are attempting to turn a profit from their daughter's big day.

They aren't selling tickets, but, according to the rumor mill, Mr. and Mrs. Middleton are planning to sell several wedding-themed items, including cake toppers and Union Jack teapot vases, at their online store, Party Pieces. Though the couple denies the items in any way exploit the wedding of their eldest daughter, others are calling the sale a bit uncouth. This isn't the first time Kate's family has run afoul of royal etiquette. And while the  gaffes certainly aren't the stuff of international incident, they have stirred the gossip pot in the U.K. Back in 2007, Kate's mom was spotted chewing gum "nonstop" while attending a royal event, a major no-no. "Trident-Gate" was caught on camera and led to quite a few articles on the faux pas.
But hold on. A 2010 article from the U.K.'s Telegraph explains that not all of the family's bad press is fair. For example, according to legend, Carole Middleton committed the ultimate bit of poor etiquette when she once greeted the Queen by saying "pleased to meet you" instead of the appropriate response ("How do you do?"). There's only one problem -- again, according to the Telegraph, the alleged meeting "never took place."
And yet, there is no denying that the family is well known for saying or doing the improper thing (at least according to royal standards). Younger sister Pippa raised a few eyebrows when she gave an interview that promoted the family business just weeks before the engagement was announced. Some questioned if the timing was a way to drum up business.
And what wedding (nay, what family?) would be complete without a black sheep uncle? Kate's uncle, Gary Goldsmith, was allegedly caught in a drug-related sting back in 2009. There's no word on whether Carole's younger brother will be invited to the April 29 wedding, but he has said that he is "very happy and excited" for William and Kate.
